When photographer and filmmaker Aaron Tredwell met Janet Mock, he recognized immediately that she was the woman of his dreams. Once Janet shared her story with him about being a trans woman, their relationship was challenged by many questions.
“After Janet opened up to me, I knew that this was so much bigger than just dating some girl,” said Aaron, who has been the subject of Janet’s writing from her “coming out” story in Marie Claire to her seminal essay “I Told My Boyfriend I Was Born A Boy” in XoJane/Huffington Post. “I remember saying, ‘If I decide to be in this relationship, it’ll be me and you against the world.’”
When Janet made the decision to invite the world into her life in 2011, the Missing Piece Podcast was Aaron’s way of communicating his perspective on living their private life publicly. Radical in the sense that most partners – specifically male partners – of trans women rarely stand by their women who live visibly, Aaron and Janet’s relationship is an example of what’s possible when we unapologetically follow our hearts.
The Missing Piece Podcast offers a window into their life in just 23 episodes that document the year 2011, a pivotal one where Janet made the decision to share her life with the world. Subscribe to the Missing Piece on iTunes. No iTunes access? Stream it here!
