Congrats Reverend Joyce McDonald (@joyketa) on the Congrats Reverend Joyce McDonald (@joyketa) on the opening of your solo show!I’m in love with this “testimonial sculpture” I collected called “Mother’s Prayers” — Terracotta air dry clay, paper towel, acrylic, glitter, varnish — 12 x 6 x 6 in.This particular piece reminds me of my grandmother Shellie Jean Gipson and her prayers that shielded our family, acting as an adhesive that solidified our bonds to her and one another. The power, resilience and foundational strength of Black womanhood continues to enrich my life, and I urge you to see Rev. McDonald’s show at @gordonrobichaux.Reverend McDonald is a self-taught visionary, multidisciplinary artist, AIDS activist, and minister. The artist, who is an active member of @visual_aids, created these sculptures and portraits in her apartment using her kitchen table, sink, and improvised tools such as an electric nail file. She memorializes her own life stories and wider cultural experiences of family, love, loss, illness, healing, transformation, and transcendence. In the show you’ll see pieces honoring Breonna Taylor, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, and @kaepernick7.
